Boren Scholarship Webinars
The National Security Education Program (shortly known as the Boren) Scholarship funds students to conduct language/political/cultural studies abroad in countries deemed as “critical to U.S. national security.” This is rather widesweeping, and includes countries in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East. If you have ever considered studying abroad, and are interested in working for the federal government, this is a pretty sweet deal!
To learn more about what the Boren could offer you, you can register for any of their webinars – its like a podcast FAQ and will answer questions from other students just like you.

Conduct Research at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington D.C.!
The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows program is highly competitive and hires 8-10 qualifying students to conduct research on a variety of topics, including non-proliferation, democracy building, Middle Eastern political reform, energy and climate change, South Asian politics, U.S. leadership, China-related issues and Russian/Eurasian studies.
Students enjoy the opportunity to really get involved with high-level officials and contribute to books, journal articles, and policy papers on their field of study. All interested graduating seniors are encouraged to check out our page on Carnegie to learn more about applying!
Applications are due to the SOP office by November 11, 2009.
Scholarship Season for Hard Science Majors
Science majors, it’s not too late to apply! Many prestigious scholarships awarded to science students, including National Science Foundation, Hertz, and Ford, are due in early November. These scholarships offer tens of thousands of dollars to winning students and often provide them with excellent networking opportunities. Please visit our website to check out the details.

DAAD Workshop This Week – Travel to Germany!
Why not get a stipend for your studies? The DAAD program funds both graduate and undergraduate studies abroad in Germany, and sophomores, juniors, and seniors may apply to the various opportunities they have available. CIE peer advisor and DAAD representative Joanne Buenaventura will be speaking at a couple of workshops about DAAD and what it can do for you. Please RSVP to sklrship@uci.edu if you are interested in attending.

The deadline is fast approaching! Seniors planning to go to graduate school in select fields may qualify for the Javits prestigious fellowship. While the deadline for SOP review has already passed, you can still apply, and we will still answer any questions you might have about it! Planning Ahead: Jacob K. Javits Scholarship

Summer is an excellent time to start preparing for upcoming scholarships in the fall – it gives you plenty of time to prepare important documents like your CV, which can be used for practically everything academic you apply for! October is a major month for scholarship deadlines, with the Jacob K. Javits Scholarship being due earliest, October 1. Undergraduate seniors apply for graduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences and must demonstrate financial need. Check out our website for more information at www.scholars.uci.edu!
Fulbright Scholarship Workshop

Walter Jackson, a manager with the Fulbright U.S. Students at the Institute of International Education, will be visiting UC Irvine to deliver a workshop on graduate and undergraduate Fulbright applications. His presentation is intended to give students some insight into the application process and what it entails; the presentation includes time for a Q/A session. This is a wonderful opportunity for all interested students to learn more about the Fulbright Fellowship directly from one of the foundation’s representatives. The workshop will take place May 26, 2009 (Week 9) from 10:00am-11:00am. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to the Scholarship Opportunities Program office by May 21st via E-mail or dropping in.

If you have done extensive community service and are a freshman, sophomore, or junior, the Carpe Diem Foundation Scholarship is for you! Winners receive $1,500 to be used towards tuition, room, board, and books. For more information check out our website or visit www.carpediemfoundation.org. The final application is due directly to Carpe Diem by 5/12/2009.

Looking to study, research, or even teach abroad? Need a scholarship to get there?
The SOP Office facilitates six different prestigious scholarships and grants – Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, George Mitchell, Churchill, and Gates Cambridge. Since these scholarships require UCI endorsement, our job is to evaluate and endorse applications on the campus level. To begin the process, complete a pre-application online by 4 p.m. May 1, 2009. There is NO LIMIT to the number of applications UCI may endorse so we encourage all talented students with well-defined study or research plans to apply. SOP staff will guide you throughout the process, the bulk of which occurs in the spring and summer.

Here’s an excellent opportunity for you! The SOP Office offers six different prestigious scholarships and grants – Rhodes, Marshall, Fulbright, George Mitchell, Churchill, and Gates Cambridge – that fund a broad range of academic endeavors. We require that all applicants first submit a pre-application by May 1, 2009 so we can assist in making their entries the best they can possibly be. Apply to be an SOP Intern! Are you looking for some internship experience? Do you want to know more about scholarships? If so, apply to be a Scholarship Opportunities Program Intern. You will work closely with over 34 different prestigious scholarships as well as gain experience in presentations, event planning, interviews, advising, etc. Click here for more information and an application. Applications are due by February 18th to Rebecca Harris at rharris@uci.edu.
Big Workshops. Want to win a scholarship but don’t know enough about it? The SOP is holding its annual scholarship workshops. Learn from the experts how to become a stronger candidate for prestigious merit scholarships!
- Wed., Feb. 11 – Arts, Humanities, Soc. Ecol. And Soc. Sci
- Thu., Feb. 12 – Science, ICS, Engineering and Mathematics.
If you can’t attend the workshop designed for your major, come to the other event; you’ll learn helpful scholarship information and tips at both workshops. Past student winners and faculty will present information, firsthand experiences, and tips on applying for scholarships such as the Fulbright, Marshall, USA Today, Strauss, Rotary, and the NIH. Workshops will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. In SSH 100 on 2/11 and HSLH 100 on 2/12. No need to RSVP!
Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship. If you can see yourself serving effectively as a goodwill ambassador overseas, apply for a Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholarship. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in any field may apply to study abroad for one year in any country with a Rotary club. To download an application, visit the Foundation’s website. Deadlines vary by club; March 2 is the deadline by which application drafts and all supplementary materials (such as letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) must be received in the SOP office for the Newport-Irvine Rotary club.
National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship. Freshmen through non-graduating seniors: earn free tuition and a guaranteed year of post-graduate employment through the National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship. It funds up to four years of tuition and a year of paid employment for students interested in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research
We’d like to encourage you to apply if you:
- Are a freshman, sophomore, junior, or non-graduating senior
- Are a U.S. citizen or resident alien
- Have a documented history of receiving need-based financial aid
Applications are due Feb. 28 and are available online. Apply directly to the NIH and please notify the SOP office of your intent to apply.
