No CHSC General Meeting this week
November 24, 2008 at 2:18 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
Hey CHSC goers! This Wednesday, due to Thanksgiving break, there will be NO CHSC general meeting. Instead, we encourage everyone to come out to our WEEK 10 general CHSC meeting, Wednesday at 5 in the Locus. That meeting will include the Penny Driver Winners announcement, CHP T-shirt design announcement, and our Lottery Drawing for those who have gotten a lottery ticket at a CHSC meeting. So please be there – we’ve got food!
CHSC goes to AVENUE Q!
November 24, 2008 at 2:17 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
What is AVENUE Q about?
AVENUE Q is the story of Princeton, a bright-eyed college grad who comes
to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon
discovers that the only neighborhood in his price range is Avenue Q;
still, the neighbors seem nice. There’s Brian the out-of-work comedian and
his therapist fianceé Christmas Eve; Nicky the good-hearted slacker and
his roommate Rod — a Republican investment banker who seems to have some
sort of secret; an Internet addict called Trekkie Monster; and a very cute
kindergarten teaching assistant named Kate. And would you believe the
building’s superintendent is Gary Coleman?!? (Yes, that Gary Coleman.)
Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates,
and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
In short, it’s a hilarious musical that’s coming to the Orange County P.A.C., and if you’ve never heard of it or heard of it and haven’t gotten the chance to see it yet (”I Wish I Could Go Back to College,” which was sung at last year’s banquet, is from this musical), here’s your golden opportunity: we’re arranging tickets! Ticket prices range from $10-$30 with our group discount, depending on where you want to sit. The performance that we are looking at is for Thursday, April 9th at 7:30 PM, since the PAC is close enough for a weeknight to not be a problem. Currently, we are gauging interests as to how many tickets to purchase, so if you could please e-mail Sarah Barber (sbarber@uci.edu) if you are interested or even just want more information on the musical, I will let you know how to proceed.
A WARNING: AVENUE Q may not be appropriate for some because it addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn.
Disclaimer: The Campuswide Honors Program does not endorse any material that may be presented in or for the AVENUE Q musical, and neither encourages nor discourages each student’s participation in this event, leaving that decision to the discretion of each individual. In short, please do not send angry messages to the office saying that Avenue Q is offensive to you – they are not responsible.

All of the canned foods gathered at the event are going to the Orange County Rescue Mission’s Heart for Hunger program. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Upcoming Scholarships
November 24, 2008 at 10:53 am by Jeff Fulkerson
1. Featured scholarship of the week: Truman Scholarship for government and public service. DUE JAN. 3!
Are you a junior intending to pursue a career in public service or government? Would you like a scholarship for grad school? If yes, you should apply for the Truman Scholarship today! To find out more about the scholarship, visit: http://scholars.uci.edu/prestigiousweb.asp?pid=18 . Materials are due in the SOP office by Jan. 3.
To apply, please send us an email (sklrship@uci.edu) with your full name, email address, permanent home address, and whether you have been nominated for the Truman before. Our office will register you as a candidate for the Truman and Truman will send you personalized login information to access the application.
2. USA TODAY Academic All Stars. This program is modeled after an all-star sports team, and judges look for students who have already demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Winners receive a $2,500 cash award, a trophy, and national recognition in USA Today magazine.
Applicants must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors, but do not need to be U.S. citizens. Because the award requires faculty nomination, interested students should ask a current UCI faculty member to provide a short nomination letter addressing what the student has accomplished. This letter should be on official school letterhead and signed. The postmark deadline for this scholarship is December 12, 2008.
Judges try to build a team of students who are universally outstanding and who excel in different ways. If you are a student who has demonstrated your passion for excellence, learn more about this scholarship at http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-10-20-all-usa-nomination_N.htm or at our website http://www.scholars.uci.edu/prestigiousweb.asp?pid=14 .
