Housing Application Issues
November 5, 2008 at 11:11 am by Jeff Fulkerson
The housing application window opened again this morning at 6am. For some of you, there were no issues, but for others, you were treated as if you did not have a housing guarantee. Housing Administrative Services is aware that there was a problem, and it has been corrected at this point. So if your application said that you were waitlisted, and only gave you CV and AV as housing options, then please try again to make sure that you can now complete your application. Instead of “waitlisted”, you should see “guaranteed”. If for some reason you still are having issues, please let me know right away so that we can make sure the issue is resolved.
For those of you wondering about your timestamp, you won’t be penalized because of this issue.
Penny Drive is Here!
November 5, 2008 at 11:10 am by Jeff Fulkerson
CHP Penny Drive 2008
Have you been saving up your pennies? The annual CHP Penny Drive is here! Take part in this event as all Honors halls compete to gather as many pennies as possible to win either the famous CHP BIG SCREEN TV or a PROJECTOR! So start collecting as many pennies as you can! This friendly competition will begin on Monday November 3rd and finish on Friday November 21st at the end of the week 8 Coffee Hour in the Locus.
Rules:
Dates: Monday November 3rd to Friday November 21st (Halls will have until the end of week 8 Coffee Hour to fill up their jars/boxes)
Objectives:
1. Gather as many pennies as you can!
2. Place your pennies in your designated jar/box located in the Honors Office.
3. Sabotage other halls by placing either silver coins or bills inside their jar/box!
4. Have a blast!
Details:
* One of the winners of this event will be determined by the amount of pennies per resident a hall has managed to collect. This will be calculated out by taking the total number of pennies subtracted by the total amount of sabotage money, then divided by the total number of residents.
* The other winner of this event will be determined by the total amount of money per resident a hall has raised. This will be calculated out by taking the total number of pennies added by the total amount of sabotage money, then divided by the total number of residents.
The two winners will be announced, along with the winner of the lottery drawing, at the week 9 CHSC General Meeting.

Officially, the guaranteed housing application window opened this morning at 6am. A few people were able to complete their applications, but then the server crashed. NACS is working to fix it, and should have it back online Wednesday at 6am. In the meantime, you can still pick up a housing info packet from the Honors office. It’s full of good info about roommates, deadlines, and the application process. So pick up yours today!

National Institutes of Health-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program
November 3, 2008 at 9:42 am by Jeff Fulkerson
Dear Student,
I am writing to tell you about a groundbreaking biomedical research doctoral program: the National Institutes of Health-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program. This innovative program grew from the realization that the next generation of research scientists will increasingly need to adopt interdisciplinary approaches as they strive to produce high impact research outcomes whether basic or clinical.
This is an accelerated program, and students typically receive a doctoral degree in approximately four years. There is no standard curriculum or required coursework. Rather, each student pursues an individualized course of study in which thesis work is initiated at the beginning of the first year. The thesis project is carried out as a collaboration between two labs, with half the research undertaken at NIH and half at one of the UK universities and each student being mentored by a senior scientist at each location. The program takes advantage of the superb resources and training environments at Oxford, Cambridge, and the NIH, the world’s largest biomedical research facility, the main campus of which is located in Bethesda, Maryland where a diverse community of scientists conduct their research in over 1000 laboratories.
NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Scholars have achieved at the highest levels of biomedical research, publishing first-author papers in journals such as Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and The Journal of Experimental Medicine. Graduates have gone on to do post-doctoral training in top academic institutions and industry labs, and a few have gone directly to faculty positions.
All students are fully funded by the NIH for the duration of their doctoral work at both research sites and receive a stipend, health insurance, and travel assistance. NIH also offers an MD/PhD option which can be combined with this program to allow funded MD training to be obtained from a participating American medical school. A flyer describing the MD/PhD program is also enclosed.
The December 15, 2008 application deadlinefor both programs is fast approaching. The free application is available online through the program website athttp://oxcam.gpp.nih.gov . There you will find additional program details including student biographies, descriptions of some of the exciting research projects underway, a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions list ( http://oxcam.gpp.nih.gov/prospectiveStudents/faq.asp ), and more. We would also like to invite you to participate in a teleconference call to learn more about our programs. Please email us at oxcam@mail.nih.gov or mdphd@mail.nih.gov if you would like more information or would like to participate in a conference call.
After reviewing the enclosed flyers, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. We hope to hear from you soon!
All the best,
