Upcoming Scholarships
December 1, 2008 at 5:32 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
1. Featured scholarship of the week: Truman Scholarship for government and public service. DUE JAN. 2!
Are you a junior intending to pursue a career in public service or government? Would you like a scholarship for grad school? If yes, you should apply for the Truman Scholarship today! To find out more about the scholarship, visit: http://scholars.uci.edu/prestigiousweb.asp?pid=18 . Materials are due in the SOP office by Jan. 2.
To apply, please send us an email (sklrship@uci.edu) with your full name, email address, permanent home address, and whether you have been nominated for the Truman before. Our office will register you as a candidate for this scholarship, and you will receive personalized login information to access the application.
2. USA TODAY Academic All Stars. This program is modeled after an all-star sports team, and judges look for students who have already demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Winners receive a $2,500 cash award, a trophy, and national recognition in USA Today magazine.
Applicants must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors, but do not need to be U.S. citizens. Because the award requires faculty nomination, interested students should ask a current UCI faculty member to provide a short nomination letter addressing what the student has accomplished. This letter should be on official school letterhead and signed. The postmark deadline for this scholarship is December 12, 2008.
Judges try to build a team of students who are universally outstanding and who excel in different ways. If you are a student who has demonstrated your passion for excellence, learn more about this scholarship at http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-10-20-all-usa-nomination_N.htm or at our websitehttp://www.scholars.uci.edu/prestigiousweb.asp?pid=14 .
3. Are you a junior or senior who enjoys writing and is intrigued by the pull of principles on human actions? Enter the 2009 Elie Wiesel Prize in Ethics Essay Contest to win up to $5,000 and the opportunity to meet Nobel Peace Prize-winning author and professor Elie Wiesel in New York City.
Three months after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, professor and writer Elie Wiesel established The Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity to advance the cause of human rights and peace throughout the world by creating a new forum for the discussion of urgent ethical issues confronting humankind.
Your previously unpublished essay should address ethical issues in 3,000-4,000 words. Complete the entry form at:http://www.eliewieselfoundation.org/entryform.aspx , then start writing! Ask a faculty member who has reviewed your essay to sign the form. (Any interested professor at UC Irvine may act as a faculty sponsor.) Find out more specific information about your eligibility and read past winners’ essays at the foundation’s website:http://www.eliewieselfoundation.org/ .
Send your entry form, 3 copies of your essay, and enrollment verification from the Registrar’s office by Dec. 19 (postmark date) to

Update your address!
December 1, 2008 at 5:29 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
Hey CHPers! Please make sure that we have your correct address by going to the following website: http://web.due.uci.edu/chp/updatecontactinfo.aspx . It will show you what we have in our database, as well as what the registrar has. It is important that we have accurate information, because we do mail things out occasionally. It will only take a minute to update. Thank you for your help!
**Important Reminders**
December 1, 2008 at 5:16 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
The end of the quarter is almost here, so procrastinating is not an option! Check your transcripts to make sure that you don’t have any “NR”s or holds that you need to deal with. Any “NR” from the previous quarter (Spring or Summer, if applicable) will turn to an “F” at the end of this quarter, so take care of it now before it is too late! Also, if you have a hold on your record, talk to an academic counselor to find out what you need to do to remove it. There are several types of holds, and if the hold is not removed by the end of this quarter, you will be dropped from your winter quarter classes.
If you have not yet done so, remember to sign up for the honors core class that you are supposed to enroll in. If you have problems enrolling, please let us know right away. Freshmen, you should have already picked up your authorization codes, but if not, please come see us in the office as soon as possible. If you are not planning on taking the courses laid out in your course plan, you must file a petition to waive or postpone the course. Please talk to an honors advisor if you have any questions about this process.
Scribendi Cover Design Contest
December 1, 2008 at 2:23 pm by Jeff Fulkerson
Dear WRHC members and Scribendi liaisons:
As we near the month of December, we’d like to remind you that Scribendi fine art and literary magazine, produced at the University of New Mexico, is still accepting cover design submissions for the 2009 issue. The deadline, December 12, is coming up soon.
We began our cover contest in 2008 in order to give undergraduate honors students from the western region of the U.S. an opportunity to have their designs displayed on an issue of Scribendi. This year we are continuing this tradition, and we need your students’ help!
The design should cover the front, spine, and back of the magazine, and it should include the words Scribendi 2009.
Specifications:
-Works must be 300 DPI
-.tiff and .eps files only
-CMYK color; not RGB
-No file compression
-File must be PC compatible
Cover design submissions may be submitted electronically or through regular mail. The submission form and instructions can be found on our website at Scribendi.unm.edu/Submissions/forms.htm.
Cover designs from previous issues may be viewed at Scribendi.unm.edu/Archives/previouseditions.htm.
In order to be eligible to submit a cover design, students must be undergraduates enrolled in an honors program at a school that is a member of the Western Regional Honors Council. Additionally, the student’s school must have paid its dues to the WRHC for this year. More information can be found at Wrhc.cieja.com/.
With this email we’ve included a cover contest flyer in PDF form that you can use to get the word out to your honors students. We would greatly appreciate it if you’d take a few moments to make copies of the flyer and put them up where your honors students will see them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email us at Scribendi.unm.edu or call us at (505) 277-7407. Again, the deadline for cover design submissions if December 12. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Scribendi staff 2008-2009
