Faculty Coffee Hour – This Fri!

Faculty Coffee Hour is this Friday, November 16!  It’s a great opportunity for you to eat tasty treats while engaging in intellectual discourse with distinguished UCI faculty such as Professor Gail Hart, the director of the Humanities Core Courses.  FCH will be held at the same time and place as normal coffee hour, 9-11am in the Locus.

Faculty Coffee Hour Greeters

Also, we need volunteers to be FCH greeters.  Greeters simply hang out and speak with faculty, introducing them to different students and talking to them in case they get lonely.  Please email us at chppaa@uci.edu with your name, major, and time window in which you can help out.  RSVP before Thursday and we’ll even print you up a nifty nametag!

Here are some of the faculty who are coming!

LGBT SafeZone & Speaker’s Bureau Training

safezone.jpg

Not Safe Zone certified yet? Don’t forget to sign up for a training session! Two sessions remain in Fall Quarter. One is THIS upcoming Thursday, November 1st from 10am-2pm (RSVPs must be in by Tuesday morning if you want to guarantee your spot). The other is a special 2-part session, Tuesday November 27th and Thursday November 29th, from 5-7pm both nights
(note: you must attend both 2-hour sessions to complete the training).

Safe Zone is a symbol of the University of California, Irvine’s commitment to diversity and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community on campus. Open to any campus affiliate, the program will train individuals to identify as Allies that are informed, supportive, and affirming of our LGBT communities at UCI. Safe Zone will create a more welcoming campus climate for LGBT and Ally faculty, staff, and students. Sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, the program will foster a community that can network and embrace sexual and gender identities.
Registration is available online: www.lgbtrc.uci.edu

Speaker’s Bureau Training

Interested in sharing your story? The LGBTRC’s Speaker’s Bureau is looking for new volunteers who are willing to speak about their personal experiences as LGBT and Ally in order to raise more awareness toward LGBT issues at UCI.

A 2-day training session will be held on Wednesdays, Nov. 7 and 14 from at 5:00 pm – 7:00pm!

The Speakers Bureau is composed of a group of trained speakers who share their personal journeys as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or ally individuals on panel presentations. Audiences are encouraged to ask questions to get an idea of some of the emotions, struggles or accomplishments involved in the LGBT/Ally student or staff member’s life.

Panels are often presented at the conclusions of workshops, which are offered with a number of additional services. Educational workshops are designed and delivered by peer counselors, focusing on a range of LGBT/Ally issues, or on a specific topic that is usually requested. Through lecture, discussion, panel presentations or interactive exercises, workshops are able to open up dialogue within an audience, helping participants to examine and assess their previous knowledge of LGBT issues.

Workshops and panels are geared towards creating a greater understanding of the LGBT community, and are available for academic classes, residence halls, cultural clubs and other campus organizations. If you are interested in arranging a workshop you may stop by the LGBT Resource Center or contact Matt Espino at mespino@uci.edu for any questions or to fill out a workshop request form click here.
