Mandatory Meeting for Humanities Honors Program

Today’s scheduled meeting (which I know many of you CHP students did not previously know about) has been rescheduled for this Friday (May 30) at 3:30 in HIB 143. Please plan on attending, as it is a mandatory meeting for next year’s HHP Senior Students.  Professor Silver will be letting you know what to expect during next year’s thesis class, so, as stated before, it is very important and mandatory that you attend. UROP Spring Call for Proposals

Dear Members of the CHP:

We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) Spring Call for Proposals in support of faculty-mentored undergraduate research and creative projects.  All undergraduate students in good academic standing and from all disciplines are encouraged to respond to the current call for proposals.  Proposals should be prepared by the student applicant and jointly submitted by the student and a faculty member.

UROP will fund a varied set of projects, with requests up to $1,000 for individual projects, where average amount of funding has been close to $550.  For group proposals that involve multiple students, requests can be for up to $2,500, where the average amount of funding has been close to $1,200.

Funds can be used to support such expenditures as the purchase of materials and supplies, research-related travel, and the costs incurred in the presentation of research or creative activities. These funds cannot support major hardware purchases, salaries or stipends, or travel expenditures only.  Proposals requiring no funding, or receiving adequate funding from departmental or other sources, may be submitted for a UROP Honorary Fellowship.

Proposal packets are submitted online by providing appropriate information about the undergraduate researchers, their faculty mentors and additional details related to the proposed project.  In addition, submitters will be asked to upload additional documents including the proposal, and a personal statement for each undergraduate group member evaluating her/his research experience and its impact on her/his education, as applicable. The research proposal should include background and objective of the research project, student’s specific responsibility, project’s timeline, and budget details and justification for the project. If the research involves human subjects or the use of live vertebrate animals, the appropriate IRB or IACUC protocol number is required.  Please refer to http://www.rgs.uci.edu/ora/ for guidelines and appropriate forms.

Complete proposals must be submitted online at the UROP Web site (http://www.urop.uci.edu/grants.html), by Monday, May 19, 2008.

A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the undergraduate researcher(s) and faculty mentor(s) once the submission has been received. This confirmation will provide a secure Web link that would allow students and faculty mentors to access and update the submission.  In addition, faculty mentors will be asked to upload one letter of recommendation per project, which would evaluate the student’s performance to date and capacity to complete the proposed activities.

The UROP Faculty Advisory Board will review the proposals.  Standards for evaluation of funding requests include:

-Intellectual merit in the student’s proposed research activity

-Thoroughness and completeness of the proposal packet

-Level of commitment and support from the faculty

-Assessment of student’s UCI transcript -Available Funds

Successful applicants will be notified by June 23, 2008 and may begin to make expenditures immediately.  Students are required to present their research results and findings at the UCI Undergraduate Research

Symposium on May 16, 2009, and encouraged to submit a final paper for possible publication in The UCI Undergraduate Research Journal.

Students are encouraged to attend a UROP Proposal Writing Workshop on Tuesday, May 6, 2008, from 3:00-5:00 PM in Student Services II, Classroom 1010A/B.   For more information, faculty and students may contact the UROP Office: Student Services II, Suite 2300; Zot Code 5685; Phone: (949) 824-4189; Fax: (949) 824-1607; e-mail: urop@uci.edu.

A pre-show band performance by UCI Logic & Philosophy of Science Professors Kyle Stanford and Jeffrey Barrett will kick off the event.  Battle of the Brains is a trivia competition that pits current CHP students against UCI Deans and prestigious faculty.  In addition to the trivia battle that ensues on stage, audience members participate by answering questions unknown by either team. Excitement steadily builds throughout the event as each side dukes it out over the course of three rounds. The past few years have yielded very close matches with no clear victor in sight until the final moments.  The faculty and students who compete are both in it to win – primarily for bragging rights – so neither side holds back!

The event is always themed, which manifests itself in publicity, t-shirt designs, and sometimes even costumes.  This year is themed after Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a popular video game featuring famous Nintendo mascot characters. All audience members also have the chance to enter an opportunity prize drawing that includes Magic Mountain and Disneyland tickets and a coupon for 50% off a KAPLAN test prep course. Please come witness this exciting event that the OC Register calls “One of the most enjoyable public events of the year.”
