Safe Zone Training, Spring 2008!

 

Safe Zone is a symbol of the University of California, Irvine’s commitment to diversity and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community on campus. Open to any campus affiliate, the program will train individuals to identify as Allies that are informed, supportive, and affirming to our LGBT communities at UCI. Safe Zone will create a more welcoming campus climate for LGBT and Ally faculty, staff, and students.  Sponsored by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center, the program will foster a community that can network and embrace sexual and gender identities.

 

Goals for the program:

- Identify Safe Spaces and Allies for the LGBTQ Community at UCI.

- Provide Awareness and Education about the LGBTQ Community at UCI that will empower Allies and transform the campus climate to better support UCI’s LGBTQ population.

- Establish a Social, Supportive, and Visible network of Allies.

- Provide Resources from campus, local, and statewide agencies related to the LGBTQ Community.

 

The following are the dates that Safe Zone will take place during Spring Quarter.

 

    * Tuesday & Thursday, April 8 & 10, 2-4p (WEEK 2)

    * Tuesday & Thursday, April 22 & 24, 12-2p (WEEK 4)

    * Monday & Wednesday, May 12 & 14, 4-6p (WEEK 7)

Come hear stories from LGBT professionals about being ‘out’ in the workplace and how their experiences have shaped their lives! This panel will offer all attendees an enlightening journey into LGBT lives and help ‘deconstruct’ preconceived notions, myths, and stereotypes of what it means to be out in a professional environment. Professional occupations will span from a variety areas including marketing/business, medical, and law fields. Everyone is welcome! Caitlyn’s Senior Recital

Caitlyn will be performing in a woodwind quintet as part of her senior thesis project.  It will feature two different arrangements of Erik Satie’s Gymnopedie No. 1. She will give a short oral presentation about the project and her arrangement.  Following the recital will be a reception in one of the nearby rooms in the music building, which guests are welcome to attend.

CHP Freshmen: Nominate your Favorite High School Teacher or Counselor for the Teacher Recognition Program!

Teacher Recognition Program 

You should have received an email from Dean Sharon Salinger, asking you to nominate your favorite high school teacher or counselor for the Teacher Recognition Program. If you have not yet done so, please take a few minutes to go to the website and nominate the teacher/counselor who inspired you the most in high school. Last year, the teachers nominated by CHP freshmen were honored at a special event held at UCI’s University Club. If you have ever wanted to say “thank you” to that special teacher who most significantly contributed to your high school education, now is your chance. Please make your nomination today! (Deadline for nominations is December 18.)

Queer Studies Minor Info Session

Interested in the dynamic field of Queer Studies? Don’t even know what it is? Then come to a Queer Studies info session! Professor Jennifer Terry, chair of the Women’s Studies department, will be discussing the field of queer studies, the relatively new queer studies minor, and current course offerings. Open to all!

March of Dimes Collegiate Council at UCI Proudly Presents: “Premature Birth: One Story at a Time.  An Evening With the March of Dimes Orange County Ambassador Family.”
