Five years ago a group of students from UC Davis launched Davis Wiki, a free and open community wiki dedicated to anything even vaguely related to the city of Davis and UC Davis. Today it is home to over 13,000 pages, regarding everything from campus life, the dorms, places to sleep, the cleanest bathrooms, free food, to the random trivia only locals know from being a local.
The wiki project it spawned is now starting Irvine Wiki. Like Wikipedia, it is free and anyone can edit, but without the requirement for notability. For example, on Wikipedia it wouldn’t be appropriate to state one’s student center restaurant preferences, but this is perfectly acceptable on Irvine Wiki. Our goal is to become a user friendly and entertaining resource about Irvine and UCI for residents, current and prospective students, and visitors. We want to share our collective knowledge about everything from the fastest way to get to class to tips on how to actually pick and register for class.
Celebrate UCI is this weekend, and if you don’t know what that is, wouldn’t it be nice if there was a convenient source to tell you? There are alumni that only recently discovered the Farmers Market at the University Center on Saturday mornings. Davis Wiki currently has a page on UCI, but one page is not enough.
