1.       Featured scholarship of the week: USA TODAY Academic All Stars. This program is modeled after an all-star sports team, and judges look for students who have already demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership, and community service. Winners receive a $2,500 cash award, a trophy, and national recognition in USA Today magazine.

Applicants must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors, but do not need to be U.S. citizens. Because the award requires faculty nomination, interested students should ask a current UCI faculty member to provide a short nomination letter addressing what the student has accomplished. This letter should be on official school letterhead and signed. The postmark deadline for this scholarship is December 12, 2008.

Judges try to build a team of students who are universally outstanding and who excel in different ways. If you are a student who has demonstrated your passion for excellence, learn more about this scholarship at http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2008-10-20-all-usa-nomination_N.htm  or at our website http://www.scholars.uci.edu/prestigiousweb.asp?pid=14 .

2.         If you are interested in studying a language abroad and are looking for a scholarship, come to the NSEP/Boren Scholarship Information Session on Tuesday, November 18th from 12-1PM in room 1010AB in Student Services II. Representatives from the scholarship will be there to present information about the scholarship as well as answer any questions you have. You do not need to RSVP for this event. The Boren Scholarship allows undergraduate students to study in countries that are usually underrepresented in study abroad. You can be funded for $20,000 for one year, or $30,000 for two years, depending on which scholarship you apply for. For more information, please check out www.borenawards.org .

3.         If you’re majoring in international studies, political science, social science, economics, history, Russian studies or Chicano/Latino Studies and want to earn $33,000 plus full benefits for a year as a research assistant in Washington, D.C., apply for the 2009-10 Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Junior Fellows Program!

The Carnegie Foundation, a private, nonprofit think-tank, researches the economic, political, and technological forces driving global change. It publishes Foreign Policy — a magazine covering international politics and economics — in more than 120 countries and several languages.

Fellows will conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings.

Applicants must be graduating seniors with excellent academic achievement and an interest in public policy. U.S. citizenship is not necessary but applicants must be eligible to work in the United States from August 1 through July 31 following graduation. Students on F-1 visas who are eligible to work in the US during these dates may apply.

Application packets are due tomorrow, November 11th in the SOP office. To obtain editing help on a completed draft, email Rebecca Harris at (rharris@uci.edu) .
