Honors Programs at UCI & Program Contact Information
Besides the CHP, there are many upper-division honors programs at UCI.
The list below is only a brief outline of each program, with contact
information, so you can follow up and learn more about those that are
appropriate for you.
1)
Claire Trevor School of the Arts Honors Programs:
Honors in Acting.
Students in this program receive nominations and recommendations for national
University/Resident Theatre Association auditions; eligibility, on a space-available
basis, for South Coast Repertory Theatre internships; eligibility to audition at
UCI-screened Shakespearean festivals; and eligibility to audition for the Santley
Showcase Productions. Admission to this honors program requires both eligibility

Honors in Design.
This program provides the opportunity for Drama majors to concentrate on the study and practice
of scenery, costume, or lighting design. Students study basic and advanced design techniques,
participate in classes with graduate design students, serve as assistant designers to a graduate
study or faculty designer, and possibly design a production at UCI. Admission to this program
is competitive, and students may be admitted as early as the winter quarter of the sophomore year,
but no later than the spring quarter of their junior year. There are course & gpa perquisites

Honors in Directing.
Students in this program study basic and advanced directing techniques, participate
in the Directing Laboratory with graduate Directing students, take a course
in directorial themes and/or the history of directing, and direct two full
plays in the Drama Workshop series. Admission to this program is competitive,
and undergraduate Drama majors can be admitted into the program as early as the
winter quarter of their freshman year but no later than the spring quarter of
their junior year. There are prerequisite courses for this program. For more

Honors in Dramatic Literature, History, and Theory.
This program is designed to challenge superior students beyond the scholarly
requirements of the Drama major. It provides the opportunity to advance their
knowledge of dramatic literature, history, and theory, and to further develop
their writing, analytical, and research skills. It better prepares students
for graduate study not only in dramatic literature. history, and theory, but
in all fields in the humanities and social sciences, as well as in law. Admission
this program is competitive and students must apply prior to the spring quarter
of their junior year. There are course and gpa prerequisites, and interested

Honors in Music Theatre.
This program provides a unique series of courses that give advanced training in
scene study, song interpretation, dance, voice, acting, audition technique, and
study in the history of the American musical. Performance experiences vary from
fully staged musicals to intimate revues. Students are introduced to Broadway
performance techniques through the Advanced Music Theatre Workshop and the New York
Satellite Program (a four-week intensive series of master classes held in New York).
Admission to this program is competitive, and students must audition to be admitted
after completing Drama 165 (Music Theatre Workshop II). Auditions are twice a year:
once during orientation week and once during finals week of fall quarter. .For more

Honors in Stage Management.
This program provides the opportunity for Drama majors to concentrate on the study and
practice of stage management. Students study basic and advance stage management techniques,
participate in classes with graduate stage management students, work as assistant stage
managers with graduate study stage managers on graduate student-directed and faculty-directed
productions, and stage manage a stage production at UCI. Admission to this program is
competitive, and students may be admitted as early as the winter quarter of their sophomore
year but no later than spring quarter of their junior year. There are course & gpa

Honors Program in Asian American Studies (AAS).
This program provides an opportunity for outstanding students to develop their research skills
through an intensive study of a topic that is of special interest to them. Open to senior AAS
majors who have a 3.3 gpa in Asian American Stuidies (at least five courses) and a 3.0 gpa overall,
and who have successfully completed Asian American Studies 100 before spring quarter of their

3) Honors Program in the School of Biological Sciences.
This program offers the opportunity for outstanding students majoring in Biological Sciences,
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Neurobiology to pursue advanced work in independent
research via participation in the Excellence in Biological Sciences Research Program. Admission
is based on gpa and an application filed during the middle part of the fall quarter, in the
year the student participates in the Excellence in Research Program. For further information,

Honors Program in Chicano/Latino Studies.
Coursework begins in the senior year, but it is highly recommended that during the spring quarter
of the junior year, students find a professor willing to serve as their research advisor.

School of Humanities Honors Program.
This is a two year, upper-division program, designed to challenge superior
students from all fields by providing special opportunities for
interdisciplinary work within an intellectually charged framework.
Small seminars and the opportunity for independent research are some of the advantages
offered by the program. Students’ research interest should be in humanistic areas of study.
Humanities honors students have the opportunity to become some of the campus’ best
informed scholars on a broad range of topics: from artificial intelligence to medical ethics,
form Shakespeare to Gilbert and Sullivan, from problems of the ancient Near East to the dilemmas of modernity.
Students should apply during the spring quarter of their sophomore year. For more information, consult the

Information and Computer Science (ICS) Honors Program.
The ICS Honors Program provides an opportunity for ICS majors to pursue advanced work
in one of the research areas in the School. Students participate in the ICS Honors
Seminar, which provides an introduction to research areas, followed by two quarters or
more of independent supervised research with a professor. Previous ICS honors projects
have included the design of a simulation model for fast-packet switching, investigation
of neural nets, and a study of the mapping problem in parallel computer architectures.
Admission to this program is based on a formal application submitted to the school in

7) School of Physical Sciences Honors Programs.
Honors Program in Chemistry.
This is a research-based program offered to selected Chemistry majors during their
final year at UCI. Students are chosen based on demonstrated competence in chemistry
and their potential to carry out research, as judged by the Chemistry faculty member
who will supervise their research, and they must have an overall GPA of at least 3.3
in their Chemistry courses at the end of their junior year. For more information,

Honors Program in Earth System Science
Admission to this program is based on an application normally submitted by the
sixth week of the spring quarter in the junior year. Applicants must have an
overall GPA of at least 3.3 and no less than a 3.4 GPA in ESS courses. For more

Honors Program in Mathematics.
This program gives selected upper-division Mathematics majors an opportunity to
participate in entry-level graduate coursework and honors research. Successful
completion of the program requires completion of at least a year-long graduate
sequence in algebra or analysis, two quarters of honors seminar, and a final
quarter in which the honors thesis is submitted. For more information, consult

This program allows social ecology majors to pursue advanced independent study.

9) School of Social Sciences Honors Programs.
Honors Program in Anthropology.
This program is designed to allow undergraduates to pursue field research and write an honors thesis on topics of their choice under the guidance of Department faculty members. Research projects typically involve a combination of library research, exploratory ethnographic interviews, participatory observation, and systemic data collection and analysis. It is open to all senior Anthropology majors with an overall GPA of 3.3 or better and with a 3.5 in Anthropology courses (at least five). Honors Program in Economics.
This program provides outstanding students with an in-depth study of economic theory and an opportunity to work more closely with faculty members in smaller honors-designated courses. In their senior year, students complete an honors thesis devoted to the collection and rigorous analysis of data, demonstrating their achievement of an advance level of research and analytical skills. Admission is based on an application normally submitted in the spring quarter after students completed two quarters of Calculus and Economics 20A-B. Applicants should have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.4 in upper division Economics courses. Honors Program in International Studies.
In this program, majors engage in research leading to the completion of an honors thesis. Students choose their research topics in consultation with a faculty advisor and must also complete two college-level language, literature, or culture courses taught in their international language. This program is open to all junior and senior international studies majors with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.5 in the major. Honors Program in Political Science.
In this honors program, students enroll in at least one honors seminar their junior year that involves intensive reading and discussion of the most influential works and fundamental issues in modern political science and prepares students for rigorous independent research. During the senior year, students write an honors thesis, designed and completed under their faculty advisor’s supervision. Honors Program in Psychology (Cognitive Science).
This two-year program provides thorough grounding in research methods and culminates with the opportunity for basic research in an area of psychology under faculty supervision. The program seeks to attract outstanding students who plan to undertake postgraduate education in a field of the psychological sciences. It is open to selected junior Psychology majors, and a formal application is normally submitted in the spring quarter of the sophomore year. Honors Program in Social Science.
Students in this program engage in research leading to the completion of an honors thesis. The topic is selected in consultation with a faculty advisor. The program is composed of three four-unit courses designed to teach students research methods and background. The program is open to all junior and senior Social Science majors who have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.30 GPA in at least five Social Science Courses. Honors Program in Sociology.
In this program, students write a thesis, designed and carried out under faculty supervision. Projects normally entail an empirical analysis of sociological data. Students meet regularly in a two-quarter honors seminar to design and carry out these projects, to exchange ideas, and to help analyze each other’s work. In addition, students attend sociology guest lectures and subsequent meetings to discuss relevant sociological issues. The program is open to outstanding Sociology majors during their junior and senior year. 10) Excellence in Research Programs.
School of Biological Sciences.
Through this program, students have the opportunity to present the results of their
research to peers and faculty, with the possibility of publication. Students must be
enrolled in experimental research under Biological Sciences 199 coursework and meet
the eligibility requirements of the program in order to participate. The program
begins each fall with a series of instructional workshops. Further information is

Department of Cognitive Sciences.

Psychology and Social Behavior.
High-achieving students majoring in Psych and Social Behavior can earn Excellence
in Research by participating in a two-component program consisting of faculty
supervised research and courses in methodology and statistics. Students apply at
the end of their junior year and there are gpa and pre-requisite course requirements.
